Badminton

The Carleton University Ravens badminton team (affiliated with Ottawa District and Ontario Badminton Associations and sponsored by Oliver Badminton) had an astounding debut year competing in a total of eight tournaments in just one semester. Given a late start to the 2011-2012 season, limited funding and being restricted to mostly early morning 7 am practices, our team exceeded expectations with numerous impressive results at regional and provincial tournaments. The badminton team aims to further improve throughout the 2012-2013 season. Recent News:

Ravens Badminton fought brilliantly at the Queen’s University External Badminton Tournament! With over 60% of the entire team traveling to Kingston to make our debut in the highly anticipated event, Carleton was made to work hard for their well-earned results. R.Ng & C.Thomas claim yet another Women’s Doubles A-draw victory making them an undefeated pair in three consecutive tournaments! Other noteworthy results include K.Luo teaming up with A.Chow from York U to reach the Men’s Doubles A-Final (losing to QueensU Badminton); both our top mixed pairs K.Luo & R.Ng (losing to RA) and A.Chow & C.Thomas (losing to QueensU Badminton) reaching the Mixed Doubles A-Semifinals and last but certainly not least, S.Tam & R.Cao overcoming a difficult draw position by pushing numerous nail-biting three-game matches to reach the Mixed Doubles B-Finals (losing to OttawaU Badminton).

The following week, R.Chan & A.Li travel with K.Chan (Carleton Alumni) & C.Cheung to Club Badminton L’Escale in Casselman where they avenge the B-Final defeat of their teammates by defeating the same OttawaU Badminton mixed pair in the early Round Robin stages of the tournament. Consequently, R.Chan & A.Li continue through the Knockout stages to eventually win the Mixed Doubles B-final bouncing back from a game down to secure victory for the Ravens.

Meanwhile in Ottawa, R.Zheng and Q.Liu compete at a Algonquin/Carleton/Ottawa Joint School’s Badminton tournament held at Algonquin College and R.Ng and C.Thomas compete at the RA Club Championships. R.Zheng, new to competitive badminton this year, defeated Q.Liu in the Men’s Doubles Final while Q.Liu won in Mixed Doubles. R.Ng and C.Thomas continue to impress by taking the B-draw win for Women’s Doubles at the RA Club Championships. Furthermore, R.Ng reached the B-semifinal and C.Thomas reached the C-final in Mixed Doubles.
