Kansas Defeats Carleton, 84-83, In Thrilling Preseason Exhibition Basketball At Scotiabank Place
The University of Kansas Jayhawks (NCAA) defeated the Carleton University Ravens (OUA-CIS), 84-83, in front of 7,189 fans at ScotiaBank Place in a thrilling preseason exhibition game showcasing top university basketball in North America. The Ravens opened the first half with a 14-4 lead over the defending NCAA Division I champion Jayhawks after just four minutes, matching Kansas in a physical battle on the boards. Strong shooting and tireless defending from both teams made for an exhilarating contest. Kansas steadily narrowed the gap before sinking a last minute basket to secure their first lead of the game, going into the halftime ahead, 43-42.
Throughout the second half the Ravens and the Jayhawks exchanged the lead as the two teams fought to break away from their opponents. Thousands of cheering fans spurred on an electrifying performance at both ends of the court.
Tied at 80 points with just two minutes remaining, Kansas pulled away with a four-point lead after sinking two crucial free throws and forcing a Carleton turnover for the additional two points. Michael Kenny (Ottawa, Ontario) replied with a three point shot to cut the lead to one point with 40 seconds remaining.
Kenny’s buzzer-beater attempt fell short, resulting in the Jayhawks’ win.
Carleton was led by Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, Ontario) with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, Ontario) had a strong performance scoring 21 points and grabbing 3 rebounds, while Kenny added 14 points and 1 rebound, scoring crucial three-point shots throughout the game.
Travis Releford (Kansas City, Missouri) led Kansas with a game-high 25 points and 5 rebounds. Cole Aldrich (Bloomington, Minnesota) chipped in with 16 points and a game-high 8 rebounds. Tyrel Reed (Burlington, Kansas) had 11 points and two boards on the night. Kansas out-rebounded Carleton 31-22 on the night.
The Ravens face South Alabama tomorrow evening at 8:00 p.m. at the Ravens’ Nest as NCAA week at Carleton continues.
