The Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team won its 11th straight House-Laughton Hoops Classic title after brushing aside the University of Guelph Gryphons 104-61 on Sunday at the Ravens’ Nest.
The Ravens came in to the final game of the tournament unbeaten, while their opponents came in with a less desirable winless streak.
Carleton started slowly with Philip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) scoring the opening basket. Both teams struggled finding their form on offence until Willy Manigat (Ottawa) floated in the first three-point basket of the game. The Ravens built on that to open up their lead to 22-9 by the end of the first quarter.
Scrubb started dominating the game and dictating the Ravens play. Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) sunk an early three pointer followed closely by Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) who sank back-to-back shots outside the paint to double the Ravens’ lead over the Gryphons.
The second quarter turned into a shootout with Guelph’s Michael Clark (Burlington, Ont.) sinking his buzzer beater outside the paint only to see Thompson sink one in response.
The Ravens started the second half up by 18 and continued their dominance with Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) notching a three pointer minutes into the third quarter.
The Ravens stretched their lead to 78-48 heading in to the last quarter of play and showed their ruthlessness scoring another 26 points to win the game.
Scrubb led Carleton with 21 points and five assists. Four other Ravens reached double digits, including his brother Thomas, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Thompson finished with 18 points, while Hinz had 11 and Manigat had 10.
Kareem Malcolm (Brampton, Ont.) led the Gryphons with nine points.
In the day’s earlier matchup, the Bishop’s University Gaiters won their second game of the tournament, taking a 77-57 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes. Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) led the 2-1 Gaiters with a game-high 16 points, while Ryan MacKinnon (Comox, B.C.) paced the 1-2 Vikes with 14.
The Ravens open their season against the McMaster University Marauders in Hamilton, Ont. on Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. Their home opener is on Nov. 18 against the University of Western Ontario Mustangs.
