Ravens add two more recruits
The Carleton University Ravens have added some depth to their lineup as one goalie and one winger have committed to suit up for the men’s hockey team next season.
Ravens head coach Marty Johnston is pleased to announce that he has added a new goaltender from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to his roster. Matthew Dopud, who was the starting goalie for the Rimouski Oceanic this past season, helped his team to a second place finish in the Telus Eastern Division. He recorded a goals against average of 3.59 and a save percentage of 0.885. Dopud is familiar with the Ottawa area as he spent some time in the Central Junior Hockey League with the Kanata Stallions before beginning his major junior career.
“[Dopud] will rely on his experience as a member of the Oceanic in the Memorial Cup two seasons ago to achieve the same success at the CIS level,” said Johnston.
The Ravens have also added a very versatile player in Jordie Deagle. The Lethbridge, Alta. native played as both a defenceman and a forward this past season.
Deagle began his major junior career with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League before moving to the Prince George Cougars in 2006-07. He played his last two seasons in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels, where he scored 11 goals and added 15 assists for 26 points.
Deagle made the decision to join the Ravens because he said the program has had an impressive couple of years and everyone within the organization has their sights set on winning a national championship.
“I think playing under [Johnston] will be a great opportunity for everyone,” he said. “He has won a Memorial Cup and he undoubtedly knows how to win. He also brings a youthful approach to the game, which makes it a lot easier for him to relate to all the guys.”
Earlier this year, two former Oshawa Generals, Jeff Hayes and Tyler Taylor, made the decision to join the Ravens for the upcoming season. Despite losing four athletes to graduation, Johnston is confident his recruits will add character to the Ravens lineup and help fill the gaps.
“With Jeff Hayes, Jordan Deagle, Tyler Taylor and Matthew Dopud coming to Carleton, the Ravens are excited about the core group for years to come,” he said.
