Ravens eliminated from post-season with 6-2 loss to Redmen.
The Carleton University Ravens men’s hockey team’s playoff run came to an end on Sunday night as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the McGill University Redmen in Montreal. The No. 5 nationally-ranked Redmen took the OUA East semi-final two games to one.
Captain Yan Turcotte (Laval, Que.) got things started for the Redmen on the powerplay nine minutes into the game. The Ravens wouldn’t back down though and with less than three minutes to play in the frame, Mark Smith (Stittsville, Ont.) beat Redmen goalie Hubert Morin (St-Georges-de-Beauce, Que.) on the man-advantage to tie the game at one.
But, just one minute later, McGill regained their lead as the OUA East’s most valuable player Francis Verreault-Paul (Mashteviatsh, Que.) put the puck past Ravens goalie Alex Archibald (Ottawa). In the dying seconds of the frame, Evan Vossen (Swift Current, Sask.) put one away to give McGill a two-goal lead after 20.
The Redmen picked up their play in the second period and their pressure paid off just five minutes in as Verreault-Paul notched his team’s second powerplay marker of the game. Maxime Langelier-Parent (Levy, Que.) followed with a goal of his own just a minute later, giving McGill a comfortable 5-1 lead before the midway point of the game. The Redmen outshot Carleton 15-7 in the frame, not giving the Ravens many offensive opportunities and McGill held on to their comfortable 5-1 lead at the end of the second.
The Ravens tried for a third-period comeback as Mike Byrd (Kemptville, Ont.) pulled the Ravens within three. But, the Redmen continued to dominate, as they have done all season long on home ice. Vossen scored his second of the game and gave the Redmen the 6-2 win.
For the second straight season, the Ravens playoff run comes to an end in game three of the OUA East semi-final. McGill now advances to the OUA East Final against the UQTR Patriotes.
