Ravens perform well at Head of the Rideau
The Carleton University Ravens rowing team had a successful day on the water, earning a number of second and third place finishes at the Head of the Rideau regatta on Sept. 25.
The Ravens faced stiff competition from many universities and clubs from eastern Ontario and Quebec. In attendance were crews from the University of Ottawa, Trent University, Queen’s University, McGill University, Dawson College, RMC and Boucherville.
Raven Darren Major started the day with a third place finish in the varsity heavy men’s single event. This was followed by second place finishes by Josh King in the open lightweight single and Matthew Fournier in the varsity lightweight single. On the women’s side, Lindsay Los and Francina Jackson both finished third in the varsity women’s heavyweight and lightweight singles respectively.
Fournier and King teamed up and placed second in the varsity lightweight double. King later rowed with Major and came in second in the open men’s double event. Similarly, Los and Elise Damoiseaux finished second in the varsity women’s double.
The Ravens bitter sweet victory of the day came in the novice men’s four event. The crew, comprised of Kirstin Besemann, Megan Haley, Robert Spina, Shane O’Neil with Sarah McCue as cox, won the race but could not receive the medal because they were a composite male/female crew.
The overall points trophy was awarded to Trent University with Queen’s and Ottawa coming in second and third. Carleton was fourth overall.
The event marked the Ravens only local race for the fall season. The Head of the Rideau regatta follows a time trial format where crews compete against the clock over a 5.6 km course starting past the Hunt Club Bridge and finishing in Mooney’s Bay. Events were help for singles, doubles, fours and eight man boats.
Next up for the Ravens rowing team is the Head of the Trent on Oct. 1 in Peterborough, Ont.
